A new online course in oil painting – exploring the possibilities of oil paint in texture, colour, tonality, brushwork etc – structured around the development of paintings from source material – from existing master artworks and from our own sketches and artworks.
The course will have 2 subjects of focus - firstly the development of pictures from other artworks and studies, and secondly the exploration of oil paint itself. Through the course students will create drawings and paintings as weekly studies and the ten week course will be structured around three mini-projects within it. We will look at analysing and interpreting master artworks as motifs for painting and reinterpretation stylistically and technically. We will also look at various aspects of oil painting including painting surfaces, brushes, mediums, colour palettes etc.
To copy, learn from and reinterpret existing master artworks and to develop paintings in the studio from research studies and sketches have long been part of the working practices of artists. In my own work I have used both practices throughout my carreer and moreso in the last five years or so. I think there is a value in them and that they can add an extra dimension and help us develop practices that can contribute to work done from direct observation.
Through the course we will look at the work of other artists who have worked in this way such as Van Goch, Tinterretto, Degas, Delacroix and Picasso.
The classes take place on Zoom (with some video which is on Youtube). And class size is restricted to ten maximum. The general format is that I introduce a topic to focus on; talk through it and explore what it is; then there is usually a short video of me demonstrating practically and in terms of materials; followed by a look at some artists who have used/worked in this way. After that I make a suggestion for directed work which the students can do through the week and email images in to me. The next class starts with me talking through and giving individual feedback on these sent in pictures.
The course will be over ten weeks, each class roughly 2 hours. Running on Wednesdays starting Wednesday 29th January 2025. Cost £390 (which can be split into 2 payments).
